about

“From Babylon To India” was the first CD that I ever produced. I set out to create an all electronic instrumental ’New Age’ album of my best compositions at the time. These were songs originally written from 1989 - 1994 at The Inlett in Olympia, WA and Sunwood Station in Lacey, WA. Most were created using my Roland D-50 Linear Arithmetic Digital Synthesizer and an Alesis SR-16 Drum machine out at The Inlett cabin. After I got married in 1992, I was able to have the space for a small computer based MIDI sequencer studio where I expanded these pieces into larger multi track versions during 1993-1994.

After I had finished programming and editing the songs, I exported them onto a floppy disc with a Alesis DataDiscSQ as Standard MIDI Files. I booked some time with Arcade Digital Recording Studio and with the help of Bruce Whitcomb we began to record these MIDI performances, one track at a time, onto an Alesis ADAT digital recorder. We set up all of the synthesizers, drum machines, MIDI Modules and FX Units and plugged them into his Mackie Mixer console. Then with the DataDiscSQ connected to the music gear, I would mute all of the MIDI channels except for the one we were recording and ’stripe’ it onto digital tape. This made the recording session run very efficiently in budgeting our time for the entire project.

The album was mixed with all of the extensive layering of instruments using quite basic EQ settings, FX processors that were there in the studio, plus we borrowed a couple more silver UREI LA2A leveling amplifiers too.

After that I handed the final mixes off to Karl Welty who did the audio editing. Then went to Ross Nyberg at Disc Master for the final mastering. Philip “Pip” McCaslin at Realtime Audio in Seattle made the CDs and did realtime dubs of the cassettes for the finished products.
